Panjab University PhD scholar dies of electrocution, students stage protest outside VC residence

PTC News Desk: A Panjab University research scholar died of electrocution at the university's South Campus in Sector 25 on Tuesday morning.
The victim has been identified as Jyoti, a resident of Rewari, Haryana, who was pursuing her PhD from the Department of Biotechnology at Panjab University.
According to the reports, Jyoti came in contact with an electric current, reportedly spread from an electric junction box, while she was on her way to the department from Girl's Hostel No. 10.
According to the onlookers, the victim was rushed to the Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16 soon after she fell on the ground, where doctors declared her dead.
Following the incident, students raised concerns over the safety measures on the campus demanding that the electricity poles, streetlights, and exposed wires should be inspected regularly, especially during the rainy season, to prevent such accidents.
The students have also demanded a comprehensive safety audit of the entire campus and immediate repairs wherever potential hazards are identified.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination. Officials said the exact cause of the incident will be determined after the post-mortem report and the investigation are completed.
