PM Modi likely to visit US in December for G20 Summit, to hold bilateral talks with Trump

PTC News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to the United States for the G20 Summit in December, where US President Donald Trump will host the gathering of world leaders, according to people familiar with the preparations.
If PM Modi travels to Florida, he is also expected to hold bilateral talks with the US President Trump on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.
The summit will take place from December 14 to 15 at the Trump National Doral Miami resort.
The government has not yet made any formal announcement about the proposed visit or meeting. Such announcements are usually made closer to the scheduled date.
The possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump comes as India and the US continue discussions on trade and other areas of bilateral cooperation.
The meeting could also be significant in view of the US threat to impose a 100% tariff on Indian imports over India’s purchase of Russian oil.
Modi and Trump last met on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France, in June. During the meeting, they reviewed India-US cooperation in areas including trade, defence, energy and technology. They also discussed negotiations for an interim bilateral trade agreement.
Trade and other areas of cooperation
India and the US have maintained regular high-level engagement in recent months. Trade, defence, technology, critical minerals and energy have emerged as key areas of cooperation.
The two countries are also working towards a broader bilateral trade agreement. US officials have said that bilateral trade is currently around $240 billion, with both sides aiming to increase it to $500 billion in the coming years.
Possible Quad Summit
Preparations are also reportedly underway for a possible Quad leaders' summit on the sidelines of the G20 meeting.
The summit could bring together the leaders of India, the US, Japan and Australia. The four countries are looking to expand cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, critical minerals, emerging technologies and disaster relief.
