PTC Web Desk:  In another shocking case of alleged dowry harassment, a 27-year-old woman was found hanging at her residence in Bengaluru on Wednesday. The police have arrested her husband, Praveen, for allegedly abetting suicide. The deceased, identified as Shilpa, had been married to Praveen, a former software professional, for about two-and-a-half years. The couple has a one-and-a-half-year-old child, and her family said she was pregnant again. Shilpa had earlier worked with IT major Infosys.

According to her parents’ complaint, Praveen’s family demanded Rs 15 lakh in cash, 150 gram of gold jewellery, and household items before the wedding. Despite fulfilling these demands, the family alleged that Shilpa continued to face harassment for more money and valuables after marriage.

Her uncle, Chennabasayya, claimed that the family had already sacrificed heavily to meet the demands. “We sold our house and spent nearly Rs 40 lakh on the wedding, apart from giving 160 gram of gold ornaments. Yet, a few months ago, he again took Rs 10 lakh from us. At the time of marriage, he claimed to be a BE, M Tech graduate but has been selling pani puri for the past two years,” he alleged.

He also expressed doubts over the circumstances of Shilpa’s death. “There was no chair or support under the fan, and the fan itself was not easily reachable. There were no signs of forced entry either,” he said.

The police have registered a case and initiated further investigation into the matter.

The case comes close on the heels of another alleged dowry-related death in Greater Noida, where a 26-year-old woman, Nikki, was allegedly set ablaze by her in-laws. Nikki’s husband and in-laws are currently in 14-day judicial custody.
