PTC News Desk: In a rare turn of events, the 13,058-foot-high Rohtang Pass will remain open for vehicular movement in December as well. According to an order issued by Kullu Deputy Commissioner Torul S Raveesh, permission for 4×4 vehicles to travel towards Rohtang has now been extended until December 28.

The development has been welcomed by tourists and local stakeholders, underscoring how favourable weather conditions and regulated access have helped extend the tourism season in the Manali region. Rohtang Pass, which was officially opened to tourist vehicles on May 17, saw consistent footfall through the summer and autumn months. However, an early bout of snowfall in Himachal Pradesh’s high-altitude areas led authorities to close the pass on October 8 as a precautionary measure. After reviewing road and weather conditions, it was later reopened, allowing limited and controlled vehicular movement.

As per recommendations from Manali Sub-Divisional Officer Raman Sharma, vehicles are permitted to travel between Gulaba and Rohtang from 9.30 am to 12 noon, with a mandatory return from the Marhi check post by 3 pm. The district administration has clarified that the extended access is subject to existing rules and conditions, and has urged drivers and tour operators to strictly adhere to prescribed timings and safety guidelines.

This year’s situation contrasts sharply with last winter, when vehicular movement beyond the Gulaba barrier was suspended on December 1 due to severe road icing caused by sub-zero temperatures. In previous years, such early closures were common, making the prolonged access this season particularly noteworthy.

Tourists visiting Manali are making the most of the rare opportunity. “We never thought we’d get this close to Rohtang in December,” said Rohan Mehta from Delhi, adding that snow activities, breathtaking views and the thrill of navigating icy roads made the experience memorable. Ananya Sharma from Jaipur echoed the sentiment, calling her visit a true adventure and highlighting snow biking and sledging near Marhi as major attractions. “It feels like a winter carnival,” she said.
