SC seeks response from Mohammed Shami, Bengal govt on Hasin Jahan’s plea for higher maintenance
Earlier, Hasin Jahan had demanded Rs 10 lakh per month —Rs 7 lakh for herself and Rs 3 lakh for their daughter, but the court did not accept her request
PTC Web Desk: The Supreme Court has issued notices to cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government, seeking their responses to a petition filed by Shami’s estranged wife, Hasin Jahan. In her plea, Jahan has requested a revision of the maintenance amount she currently receives from the cricketer following their divorce.
While hearing the matter, the Supreme Court bench made an oral observation that the interim maintenance ordered by the Calcutta High Court for Jahan and the couple’s daughter appeared to be “quite handsome,” according to a report by news agency ANI.
This development comes months after the Calcutta High Court directed Mohammed Shami to pay a total of Rs 4 lakh per month as maintenance— Rs 1.5 lakh to his wife and Rs 2.5 lakh to his daughter. The order, issued by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee on July 1, 2024, stated that the amount was fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both.
Earlier, Hasin Jahan had demanded Rs 10 lakh per month —Rs 7 lakh for herself and Rs 3 lakh for their daughter, but the court did not accept her request. The High Court order marked an increase from earlier district court directive in 2023, which had fixed the monthly payment at Rs 1.30 lakh.
Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan were married in 2014 but separated in 2018 after Jahan filed an FIR against the cricketer, accusing him of domestic violence and abuse. Since then, the two have been engaged in an ongoing legal battle over financial and personal matters.
