PTC Web Desk: Activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital early Saturday after completing 21 days of an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. The move has sparked fresh controversy after his wife, Gitanjali J. Angmo, questioned the decision and demanded that no medical treatment be administered without her consent.

Speaking after Wangchuk was taken to the hospital, Angmo said she was opposed to any medical intervention unless both she and the family's doctor approved it.

She claimed Wangchuk had appeared stable a day earlier and argued that there was no immediate need for hospitalisation. Angmo also said she would hold authorities responsible if anything happened to him during his stay at the hospital.

Delhi Police cite medical advice

The Delhi Police defended the decision, stating that Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital for essential medical care based on expert medical advice and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court. Police officials also appealed to the protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar to peacefully end their demonstration and vacate the protest site.

'I have lost 20 per cent of my body'

On Friday night, Wangchuk released a video message in which he acknowledged that his health had deteriorated significantly during the fast.

He said he had lost nearly 20 per cent of his body weight but remained determined to continue the hunger strike. Appealing to the government, he urged authorities to pay attention to the concerns being raised by students and young people.

Hunger strike entered 21st day

Wangchuk began his indefinite fast on June 28 in support of protests led by the CJP over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and the reported deaths of students linked to the controversy.

His protest has drawn national attention, with supporters demanding accountability and greater transparency in the handling of the examination issue.

High Court monitoring health

The Delhi High Court has been closely monitoring Wangchuk's health during the protest. The court has directed that his medical condition be assessed regularly and that appropriate treatment be provided whenever doctors consider it necessary.
