Three men arrested in Coimbatore college student assault case, injured in police firing during capture

Incident took place on Sunday evening, when a female college student was allegedly abducted and assaulted near Coimbatore airport

PTC Web Desk: The Coimbatore City Police have arrested three men accused in the sexual assault case of a college student near Coimbatore airport. According to an ANI report, the arrests were made on Tuesday following an intensive search operation.

Confirming the development, Police Commissioner Saravana Sundar said that the accused — identified as Guna, Karuppasamy, and Karthik alias Kaleeswaran, were injured in the leg when the police opened fire after they allegedly tried to escape during the arrest in Vellakinaru, on the outskirts of the city. A head constable also sustained injuries in the encounter.

The accused were later taken to the Coimbatore Government Hospital for treatment. Police sources said the trio has a criminal background and was traced with the help of CCTV footage.

According to reports, the incident took place on Sunday evening, when a female college student was allegedly abducted and assaulted near Coimbatore airport. She had been in a car with a male friend when the accused allegedly broke the vehicle’s window, attacked her companion, and took her to another location. The survivor was rescued the next morning and is currently receiving medical care.

Following the assault, the police formed seven special teams to track down the suspects.

The incident has sparked widespread concern in Tamil Nadu, with opposition leaders criticising the state government over law and order.
