Western disturbance to trigger rain in Punjab, Haryana till May 7; check IMD forecast
A fresh western disturbance is set to bring light to moderate rainfall across Punjab and Haryana till May 7, leading to a drop in temperatures, according to IMD
PTC Web Desk: A fresh spell of rainfall is likely to bring temporary relief from rising temperatures in Punjab and Haryana, as a new western disturbance becomes active over the Himalayan region from May 2.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), scattered light rainfall is expected in parts of both states on May 2, 3, 6 and 7, while more widespread showers are likely on May 4 and 5. The weather system is also expected to bring thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds during this period.
Meteorologists have indicated that daytime temperatures may rise by around 2°C over the next 48 hours. However, a subsequent drop of 3°C to 4°C is expected as the rain activity intensifies.
In the past 24 hours, Rohtak in Haryana recorded the highest maximum temperature at 40.8°C, while Bathinda in Punjab registered 39.5°C. Light to moderate rainfall has already been reported from several locations in both states, with isolated incidents of hailstorm reported in parts of Haryana.
The IMD also noted that rainfall during the March-April period has remained above normal in both states. Haryana has recorded 29 per cent excess rainfall, while Punjab has witnessed a surplus of 19 per cent.
Meanwhile, the weather system is expected to impact other northern regions as well. Jammu and Kashmir may receive light to moderate rainfall between May 2 and 5, while similar conditions are forecast for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand from May 3 to 7. Higher reaches in these regions may also witness snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds.
