Lok Sabha session: BJP MP’s remarks on live-in relationship sparks row, labels it ‘dangerous disease’
Live-in relationships: Live-in relationships, where unmarried couples choose to live together without formalizing their union through marriage, have become more common in many societies. Different individuals and cultures hold diverse opinions on the matter, often influenced by personal beliefs, cultural values, and societal norms.
Some people may view live-in relationships as a positive choice that allows individuals to understand each other better before committing to marriage. Others may hold more conservative views and see it as contrary to traditional values
Recently, comments of Live-in Relationships and love marriages sparked debate in a recent Lok Sabha session as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Haryana Dharambir Singh during the 'Zero Hour' termed live-in relationships a "dangerous disease" and urged government to make law against it.

Highlighting the high divorce rates in love marriages, Dharambir Singh said that consent of the parents of the bride and groom should be made mandatory before love marriages.
"It is my suggestion that the consent of the mother and the father of the bride and groom be made mandatory in love marriages because, in large parts of the country, marriage does not happen in the same 'gotra' and due to love marriages there are a lot of conflicts in the villages,” Dharambir Singh added.
Emphasising the cultural significance and philosophy before arrange marriages, MP added that several youth in society gives priority to marriages arranged by parents or relatives.
Terming arrange marriage as the sacred relationship, BJP MP stated that divorce rate in India is about 1.1 percent as compared to America which is 40 percent. Collecting all the data and reports, BJP MP said that high rates of divorce cases are due to love marriages.
Labeling live-in relationships as the social evil, BJP MP said, “ "Such relationships are very common in western nations but this evil is fast spreading in our society also and the consequences are horrible.”

Bringing the crime cases of Shraddha (Walkar) and Aftab (Poonawala) to limelight, BJP MP stated that such cases sent shockwaves to community and raises safety concerns.
Such cases keep coming to the fore almost daily, he added while referring to the gruesome case in Delhi of a man allegedly killing his live-in partner and chopping her body to pieces.
