PTC Web Desk:  The recent victories secured by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in three pivotal heartland states have not only strengthened its hold in the country, but have also positioned the party favourably for the upcoming 2024 General Election.

With an expanded presence in key regions, the BJP is poised for a potential third consecutive term in power, marking a significant shift in India's political scenario.

BJP's Dominance and Strategic Expansion

The BJP's triumphs in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, earlier held by the Congress, underscore the party's growing influence and extensive reach across the nation.

Currently presiding over 12 states independently, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, the BJP commands governance over 41 per cent of the country's population. Additionally, its alliances in states such as Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim further bolster its authority, encompassing over 50 per cent of the populace.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing party workers recently, interpreted these victories as a testament to "the populace's rejection of corruption, appeasement, and dynastic politics". He emphasised the people's resolute stand against these issues, reflecting their support for the BJP's governance model.

Congress' Diminished Position and Alliance Dynamics

In stark contrast, the Indian National Congress (INC) finds itself governing only three states — Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh — which account for a mere 8.51 per cent of the nation's population. With alliances in Bihar and Jharkhand, the Congress' influence extends to only 19.84 per cent of Indians, highlighting its declining presence and bargaining power within national alliances.

BJP's Northern Strength and Electoral Machinery

The BJP's stronghold in the northern states reaffirms its support base and electoral prowess. Despite initial skepticism, the party's remarkable victories in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh underscore its formidable election machinery and adaptability in course correction.

Congress' Internal Reckoning and Criticism from Alliance Partners

The loss of Rajasthan and the electoral setback in Chhattisgarh are expected to reduce the Congress' bargaining power within the national alliance. Criticism from allies, including Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress, accentuates the urgency for the Congress to introspect and revamp its strategies to regain lost ground.
