Tamil Nadu updates: The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has entered a high-stakes phase after actor-turned-politician Vijay formally staked claim to form the government, only to be asked to return with stronger numbers. With support still in flux, the race to secure a majority has triggered intense negotiations and shifting alliances across party lines.

Governor seeks clear majority

After meeting Governor Rajendra Arlekar at Raj Bhavan, Vijay presented backing from 112 MLAs. However, the Governor reportedly insisted on a minimum of 118 legislators for a clear mandate in the 234-member Assembly. The development has forced Vijay and his party to accelerate efforts to gather additional support.

TVK’s strong debut, but short of majority

Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), delivered a remarkable performance in its electoral debut by winning 108 seats. Despite the impressive showing, the party remains 10 seats short of the majority mark, making alliances crucial for government formation.

Congress backs vijay with conditions

The Indian National Congress has extended support to Vijay, contributing five MLAs to his tally. However, the backing comes with a caveat: Congress has emphasised that no alliance should include forces it considers “communal” or opposed to constitutional values.

The decision followed high-level discussions involving senior leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. The party is also reportedly reaching out to smaller regional and Left parties to consolidate support behind the TVK.

Allies yet to decide

Several key players remain undecided. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam-led alliance, is scheduled to hold a crucial meeting  before announcing its stand. Meanwhile, Left parties have postponed their decision, adding to the uncertainty.

AIADMK’s mixed signals

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has emerged as a potential kingmaker, though its internal stance appears divided. Senior leaders like C V Shanmugam and S P Velumani have reportedly supported extending outside backing to Vijay, rather than joining the government directly.

Speculation intensified after a vehicle linked to a TVK leader was seen at the residence of Edappadi K Palaniswami, carrying a formal request for support. However, talks appear to have slowed after Congress stepped in to back Vijay.

DMK slams Congress move

The Congress decision has drawn sharp criticism from the DMK, which accused its former ally of political opportunism. DMK leader Kanimozhi alleged that Congress had abandoned its long-standing partnership for political gain.

Responding to the criticism, Congress leader Karti Chidambaram dismissed the remarks, stating that such reactions reflect a misunderstanding of how post-election alliances are formed.

Oath ceremony preparations underway

Despite the uncertain numbers, preparations have reportedly begun for Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony, tentatively scheduled for May 8 at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. Rahul Gandhi is expected to attend the event, signalling Congress’s visible support for the emerging alliance.
