PTC News Desk: In a significant development, Dr Jagmohan Singh Raju, IAS (Retd), has stepped down from the post of general secretary of Punjab BJP. The resignation comes days after appointment of Kewal Dhillon as state party chief.

Acknowledging that these initiatives would require considerable time, travel and sustained engagement, Raju said it would not be fair to hold a major organisational post while simultaneously pursuing these commitments. "I would, therefore, be grateful if, for the present, I may kindly be spared any major organisational responsibility that demands my full time," he said.

In a letter dated June 5 addressed to Manthri Srinivasulu and made public through a social media post on Sunday, Raju said his four-year tenure as the party's vice president and general secretary had been among the most fulfilling phases of his political career.

Explaining his decision, he said he is currently engaged in several important causes, including securing Holy City status for Amritsar, improving educational opportunities for Punjab's youth, ensuring the rights of underprivileged children under the Right to Education Act, safeguarding the constitutional rights of Scheduled Castes and Sikhs, addressing religious conversions and the drug menace, promoting the Punjabi language, and pursuing long-standing Punjab-related issues such as water disputes and Chandigarh.

Raju noted that these initiatives would require extensive travel, time and sustained efforts. Holding a major organisational position while simultaneously pursuing these commitments, he said, would not be appropriate.

“I would, therefore, be grateful if, for the present, I may kindly be spared any major organisational responsibility that demands my full time,” he wrote in the letter.

Raju, who serves as a Visiting Fellow at the Cambridge Judge Business School and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Public Administration at Panjab University, had been regarded as a strong contender for the post of Punjab BJP president before the party leadership eventually selected Sunil Jakhar Dhillon.

His resignation comes shortly after former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh publicly questioned the leadership appointment, fuelling speculation about growing unease among senior BJP leaders in Punjab ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
