Punjab Assembly session: Resolution condemning paper leaks, examination irregularities and Sonam Wangchuk's detention passed
A condemnation motion was passed in the Punjab Assembly over the alleged mistreatment of students during the protests against the NEET paper leak.
Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema said that students seeking justice in Delhi, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh were subjected to police baton charges during the agitation.
Condemning the BJP-led Central Government's response, Cheema said, "I move this condemnation motion against the Centre's handling of the protests. More than 70 paper leaks have taken place over the past decade." He also condemned the alleged arbitrary detention of Sonam Wangchuk.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann claimed that 65 cases of paper leaks were reported between 2019 and 2024, while 93 incidents had been reported since 2014, when the BJP came to power at the Centre.
Harjot Singh Bains said, “This is not the time to forgive the students, but to seek their forgiveness for failing them as policymakers and as a government.”
Waris Punjab De leader Manpreet Singh Ayali raised the issue of alleged fake police encounters during the days of terrorism. He claimed that hundreds of people who went missing were cremated as unidentified persons.
The alleged paper leak in the pharmacist recruitment examination dominated Question Hour in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday, as Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira targeted the AAP government over the issue.
Khaira questioned the government's response, saying that while the AAP had strongly criticised the BJP over the NEET paper leak, it had remained silent on the alleged leak in the pharmacist recruitment exam. He also raised concerns over alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations, including police recruitment tests.

This Assembly session is expected to be stormy, with heated debates likely. Opposition parties, including the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), and the BJP, are preparing to corner the government over several key issues, including law and order, the proposed law on sacrilege of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, paper leak cases, the drug menace, farmers' concerns, and the state's rising debt.
PTC News Desk: The seven-day monsoon session of the 16th Punjab Vidhan Sabha will begin on Monday, and the proposed changes to the anti-sacrilege law are expected to trigger a confrontation between the ruling government and the Opposition. As this is likely to be the last Assembly session before the Punjab elections early next year, the issue is expected to dominate proceedings because of its religious and political importance ahead of the 2027 polls.
The Opposition is also set to question the AAP government over the recent paper leak in Faridkot and similar incidents, alleging irregularities in the recruitment process.
Apart from this, the Congress, BJP and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are expected to corner the government over Punjab's rising debt, alleged financial mismanagement, flood preparedness, worsening law and order, and shortcomings in policing.
