AAP MLA from Baghapurana calls Miri-Piri Khalsa March 'road show', sparks outrage; SGPC condemns remarks
PTC News Desk: Amid growing controversies over the rampant incidents of alleged sacrilege in Punjab, AAP MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand from Baghapurana's remarks calling the Miri Piri Khalsa March as a "road show" has triggered another debate.
His remarks have drawn strong criticism from the Shiromani Akali Dal and several Sikh leaders, who have demanded that he apologise to the Sikh community
The Miri Piri Khalsa March has been organised to spread awareness about the Miri-Piri philosophy introduced by the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib, and to promote Sikh values. The march is being held under the guidance of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and has received a massive response from Sikh devotees. At every stop, members of the Sikh community have gathered in large numbers to pay their respects and seek blessings.
'It is like a road show': MLA
A video of MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand has gone viral on social media. The purported video is said to be from a meeting or event attended by AAP workers. During his speech, he says:
"We are sitting here, and just about one-and-a-half kilometres away, a large procession carrying Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is taking place. I would not call it a kirtan; it is more like a road show."
Akali Dal condemns the remarks
The MLA's comments have sparked outrage among many Sikhs. Condemning the statement, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema said the AAP would have to face the consequences of such remarks.
Cheema said such comments were not surprising, alleging that even the Punjab Chief Minister had been at odds with the Akal Takht. He further claimed that the MLA's remarks reflected what he described as the AAP's "anti-Sikh face."
