SGPC President Polls: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Wednesday will elect its new president. Besides the executive committee, the SGPC House should ideally be elected every five years. In the present House, there are 191 members, of which 170 are elected members from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh.

Fifteen members are nominated from across the country, and the remaining six members are the Jathedars of the five Takht Sahibs and the Head Granthi of Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib.

As many as 30 seats in the house are reserved for women.

At present, the contest is between Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami and Bibi Jagir Kaur unless some other member enters the fray.

Previously, Shiromani Akali Dal on Monday expelled Bibi Jagir Kaur from its primary membership for alleged anti-party activities after she was adamant to contest the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee presidential poll.

The decision came after Jagir Kaur did not appear before the party's disciplinary committee, that sought to explain her decision of contesting the election. Bibi Jagir Kaur, who has held the post of the SGPC chief thrice previously, was staunch on contesting the poll.

Meanwhile, making a big statement senior SAD leader Sikandar Singh Maluka said that if Bibi Jagir kaur  manages to garner even 50 votes in the SGPC presidential polls then, he will tender resign from active politics.
