20-year-old college student killed after speeding car, evading police, rams into three in Jaito
Arshpreet was walking from the railway station towards the market when a speeding car coming from the Bisnandi Road railway crossing hit her.
PTC News Desk: A speeding car allegedly attempted to evade police party rammed into pedestrians and a tea stall near the Jaito railway station on Friday, killing a 20-year-old college student and injuring two others.
The deceased has been identified as Arshpreet Kaur, daughter of Iqbal Singh, a resident of Hardayal Nagar, Jaito. She was a BCA student at DAV College, Bathinda.
Arshpreet was walking from the railway station towards the market when a speeding car coming from the Bisnandi Road railway crossing hit her. She suffered serious injuries and died. The car then went out of control and crashed into a tea stall, injuring the stall owner and his brother.
People nearby rushed the injured to Civil Hospital in Jaito, where doctors declared Arshpreet dead. Police said two people were inside the car, which had a Uttar Pradesh registration number.
Police sources said the two men were suspected to be from Muktsar district and may have come to Jaito to collect drugs. However, police have not officially confirmed their identities or the reason for their visit.
According to sources, police had signalled the car to stop, but the occupants allegedly sped away, leading to the accident.
The injured tea stall workers, Bobby and Prince Kumar, said the car was being driven at a very high speed and claimed that a police vehicle was chasing it. They said the car first went towards the railway crossing but turned back after finding the gate closed and then sped towards the market. Police have not confirmed this claim.
Jaito police seized the vehicle and began an investigation. DSP Jaito Iqbal Singh Sandhu said statements from Arshpreet’s family were being recorded and further legal action would be taken according to the law.
