ED detains Punjab CMs brother-in-law and film producer Amardeep Grewal from Delhi airport

PTC News Desk: The Enforcement Directorate on Saturday detained Punjab Chief Minister's brother-in-law and film producer Amardeep Singh Grewal for questioning. He was returning from Canada and was taken into custody from Delhi airport.
The detention follows central agency's investigation into the alleged money laundering and Rs 5 crore briber case in which the name of Dr Gurpreet Kaur Mann, wife of the Punjab CM, has also cropped up.
Earlier the ED had summoned Grewal into an alleged Rs 5 crore bribery and extortion controversy linked to Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife Dr Gurpreet Kaur. Grewal’s name figured in the controversy surrounding allegations of political influence and an alleged Rs 5 crore demand for getting an FIR cancelled in an Amritsar rape case.
The case
A petition filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court described Grewal as a relative of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s wife. It alleged that Grewal demanded Rs 5 crore to settle the case, claiming he could use his close links with the CM’s wife to influence the matter.
The allegations sparked a wider controversy after retired judge Justice Ranjit Singh referred to the alleged demand of Rs 5 crore. Following this, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) directed the Punjab Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to investigate the matter.
Gurpreet Kaur has denied the corruption allegations, describing them as baseless, fabricated and politically motivated.
On September 26, a Chandigarh district court lifted an interim restriction that had prevented Justice Singh from publishing or sharing material related to the alleged Rs 5-crore demand. The court took the context of his remarks and the relevant High Court proceedings into account before making the decision.
Who is Amardeep Grewal ?
Grewal is associated with the Punjabi film industry and is linked to East Sunshine Production Pvt. Ltd. The company’s corporate records list Grewal as one of its directors. He has been associated with various Punjabi films, including Maujaan Hi Maujaan (2023) and Snowman (2022), having overseas production/release linkages, an ED official said.
