Asian Games 2023: India surpasses previous Asian Games record with 71 medals

Hangzhou, October 4: India has set a new record at the Hangzhou Asian Games, securing a remarkable 71 medals and surpassing their previous best of 70 medals achieved during the 2018 Asian Games.

This achievement was made possible when the archery duo of Ojas Pravin and Jyothi Surekha clinched the gold medal in the mixed team compound final, triumphing over their South Korean counterparts in the 2023 Asian Games held on Wednesday. In the 2018 Games, India had achieved a total of 16 gold, 23 silver, and 31 bronze medals. In the current edition of the Games, the Indian contingent has already claimed 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals, with more assured in various upcoming events.


Shooting and archery have emerged as India's standout sports in terms of medal tally at the Asian Games. In shooting, India has accumulated a total of 22 medals, while athletics has contributed significantly with 23 medals, with the promise of more to come.

On Wednesday, Indian race walkers Manju Rani and Ram Baboo secured a bronze medal in the 35km mixed race walk event, ensuring that India matches its performance from the 2018 Jakarta Games.

The 71st medal for India was clinched by compound archers Ojas Deotale and Jyothi Surekha Vennam when they secured the mixed team gold medal.

India's chef de mission, Bhupender Singh Bajwa, expressed pride in the team's achievement, saying, "It is with great pleasure that I would like to state that India has forged its impression with the best-ever medal haul in the Asian Games by crossing the 70 mark in the medals tally, and there are more to come."

India had sent its largest-ever contingent to the Asian Games with the aim of surpassing the 100-medal mark at this continental sporting event. The slogan "Aab ki Baar, Sau Paar" (translating to "crossing 100 medals this time") has been a rallying cry for the Indian team at the Hangzhou Games.

As of now, India boasts 16 gold, 26 silver, and 29 bronze medals, with over four days of competition remaining, suggesting the possibility of further successes on the horizon.
