Glenn Maxwell steps away from IPL 2024, conveys decision to RCB

PTC Web Desk: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced an indefinite break from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The decision came after RCB's loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad on Monday evening. Glenn Maxwell, criticized for his underperformance with the bat, did not play in the match against SRH, with Will Jacks taking his place. After the game, Maxwell mentioned he had approached skipper Faf du Plessis, suggesting they try a different player in his role.

During a press conference, Maxwell shared that he is not in the right "mental and physical space" at the moment and therefore decided to take a break. The Australian all-rounder did not specify how long he would be away.

Maxwell said the decision was straightforward, explaining he didn't want to dig himself deeper into a rut by continuing to play in poor form. He emphasised the importance of taking a mental and physical break to recharge and potentially return later in the season.

Maxwell's previous struggles with mental fatigue have led him to take breaks from the game in the past. His decision is also influenced by the franchise's need for better performances, considering RCB's current position in the tournament standings.

In a statement, Maxwell reflected on his recent challenges in T20 cricket, citing difficulties in making solid contact with the ball and experiencing slumps in form.

Earlier, Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar criticised Maxwell for his struggles against fast bowling, noting that the Australian batsman struggles with balls at chest or shoulder height but excels with balls below waist height.
