Assembly polls: BJP to contest from all 60 Meghalaya seats

Rituraj Sinha said that people of north-east believe in Modi and he is the only person and he can only ensure a corruption-free government.

New Delhi, February 2: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday announced that it will contest from all 60 seats of the Meghalaya Assembly which will be held on February 27. The upcoming Nagaland elections in an alliance with the state's ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, contesting on 20 of 60 seats.

On Thursday, BJP secretary and its northeast co-incharge Rituraj Sinha said that the party will fight the Meghalaya polls under the campaign and tagline of "M-Power" (Modi power), also mentioned that people of the state have enormous trust in Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He further elaborated that they believe in Modi and he is the only person and he can only ensure a corruption-free government. 

BJP chief of Nagaland and Meghalaya, Temjen Imna Along and Ernest Mawrie also named the party candidates which was approved by the party's central election committee.

Meanwhile, Rituraj Sinha, said that people of northeast started losing their cool regarding the corruption and slow pace of development, the schemes of central government have reached them, but corruption still continues. They believe that their implementation could have been better, he said.

Currently, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma-led National People's Party is in power in Meghalaya. Though BJP is a part of his government, the relations between the two parties are not smooth. Earlier, BJP had contested on 47 seats in the 2018 assembly polls and had won two.

Sinha further expressed confidence by saying that the saffron party will do wonders in the state polls and noted that Modi has visited the northeast region over 50 times in his term. This is more than the visit of all the previous PMs put together, he said, adding that Modi has always been to the region with some development package.

Sinha further said that the prime minister has converted the 'Look East' policy into 'act policy'. The Union government has worked to execute the HIRA (highways, internet connectivity, roadways and airport) model in the region which has also witnessed an era of peace.

"In the true sense, Modi has married regional aspiration of the northeast with our national priorities," he said.
