New Delhi, June 25: In a devastating incident at the New Delhi railway station, a woman lost her life due to electrocution amidst waterlogging caused by relentless rainfall in the national capital. The victim, identified as Sakshi Ahuja, a resident of Preet Vihar in East Delhi, arrived at the railway station at approximately 5:30 a.m. in the company of two women and three children.

In an attempt to avoid puddles, she grasped onto an electric pole, unaware of the imminent danger that awaited her.

Tragically, Sakshi Ahuja received a massive electric shock, which proved fatal. Witnesses immediately rushed her to a nearby hospital in a desperate bid to save her life. Despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, according to the authorities.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of exit number one at the New Delhi railway station, as stated by the police in an official statement. Upon reaching the scene, law enforcement officers discovered the woman unconscious and promptly took action to transport her to Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC) hospital. Regrettably, doctors declared her brought dead upon arrival.

Following the incident, Madhvi Chopra, the sister of the victim, lodged a complaint alleging negligence on the part of the responsible authorities. Consequently, a case has been registered based on the complaint, and further investigations are underway.

Visual evidence captured at the scene displayed exposed electric wires at the base of the pole, indicating a possible cause of the tragic accident. The railway authorities and the police have launched an inquiry into the matter to determine who should be held accountable for the negligence that led to this unfortunate incident.

Dr  Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of the India Meteorological Department, reported that Delhi had experienced a maximum rainfall of 5 cm on the day of the incident and predicted that the rain would persist for the next two days.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of ensuring public safety, particularly during adverse weather conditions. It highlights the need for regular maintenance and prompt action to address potential hazards, such as exposed electrical infrastructure, to prevent tragic accidents like the one that claimed Sakshi Ahuja's life.
