Urmila Matondkar joins Shiv Sena in presence of Uddhav Thackeray

A year after quitting the Congress party following defeat in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, the actor-turned-politician Urmila Matondkar has joined Shiv Sena on Tuesday in the presence of Uddhav Thackeray.

Urmila Matondkar had contested the Lok Sabha Election 2020 last year on the Congress ticket from the Mumbai North constituency. She joined Shiv Sena in presence of party chief and Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

She has been nominated by Shiv Sena to the Legislative Council under the Governor's quota.

The list of 12 names, including Matondkar’s name has been forwarded to the Governor BS Koshyari by the 3-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for nomination from the governor's quota.

Meanwhile, the governor is yet to approve the list.

She was defeated in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by BJP’s sitting MP Gopal Shetty. However, she had grabbed the limelight with her campaign and political understanding.

Recently, she was engaged in a war of words with actor Kangana Ranaut on her statement comparing Mumbai with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

While quitting the Congress party, she had said that her political sensibilities refused to allow vested interests in the party.

"I’ve resigned from the Congress. The first thought of resignation came to me when after my repeated efforts, no action was taken in pursuance of my letter dated 16th May, addressed to then Mumbai Congress President Mr Milind Deora. Needless to say, no one from the party was apologetic or even concerned towards me for the same despite my repeated protests,” she had said in a statement.
