PTC Web Desk:  A 16-year-old girl, Jazmin (Jasmine) Dhesi, died after being shot in Edmonton early Sunday morning. The  police have arrested a youth in connection with the case.

Jazmin was found injured in the area of 139 Avenue and 32 Street after Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officers responded to reports of a shooting. She was declared dead.

According to her family, Jazmin Dhesi had gone to spend the night at a friend's house. Sources said the teenager was at a sleepover when an altercation reportedly broke out during the early morning hours.

The available information indicates that the suspect, who is also a minor, allegedly fired a shot at close range during the confrontation. The shooting left her critically injured.

The police were called to the scene following the incident.

Edmonton police have confirmed that a youth has been arrested in connection with Jazmin Dhesi's death. However, the Edmonton Police Service has not disclosed whether charges have been formally laid against the arrested youth.

Because the suspect is a minor, further details about the accused may be restricted under Canadian law.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday. The police said additional information about the investigation is expected to be released following the post-mortem examination.

The killing comes as the Edmonton Police Service continues to address concerns surrounding youth violence in the city.

As part of its response, EPS has been strengthening its youth strategy, including initiatives aimed at preventing young people from becoming involved in gangs.
