PTC Web Desk: Suhana Gill, a 20-year-old woman of Punjabi origin, has become the youngest city councillor ever in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. She took her oath of office on November 2 and joined the new Surrey City Council headed by Mayor Doug McCallum.

Suhana Gill was born and raised in Surrey. She finished high school at 15 and then studied political science at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. She earned her bachelor’s degree at 19.

Her interest in public life started well before the election. She had been active in youth advocacy and community projects, which made her a familiar young face in the city.

She has also worked with the House of Commons and taken part in CBC News panels and she has worked in the non-profit sector. She has some experience in real estate as well. That, she says, showed her how hard it is for young families to afford a home in Surrey.

Gill ran in the October 17 municipal election as a candidate of the Safe Surrey Coalition, the party led by McCallum.

Her campaign focused on issues that matter to a fast-growing city: affordability, infrastructure, public safety, transport and opportunities for young people.

She argued that as Surrey grows, the city also needs a council that listens better, especially to students, young professionals and young families.

Suhana Gill also believes young people should not be treated only as future voters. In her view, they should have a real say in decisions that will shape their lives for decades.

She also pushed for more affordable housing and better public transport. Having grown up in Surrey and seen it change, she says she can bring a fresh view to city governance.
