Punjabi man stabbed to death in Canadas Mississauga; racial attack suspected

PTC News Desk: A Punjabi man was allegedly stabbed to death by a woman in Mississauga, Canada. The attack caused severe injuries to his neck. He was rushed to hospital, but after spending some time in the ICU, he died. Doctors said the injuries had cut off the supply of oxygen to his brain. The woman reportedly fled the scene after the attack.
The deceased has been identified as Jagjit Singh Sandhu. His sister, Jaspreet Kaur, said the incident took place on September 6, but police have only recently taken action.
According to Jaspreet, Jagjit was trying to intervene after another Punjabi man was allegedly subjected to racist remarks. She said her brother was fatally attacked outside a shelter on Dundas Street East in Mississauga.
She alleged that the boyfriend of a woman living at the shelter had confronted an Indian man, made racist comments and told him to return to his country.
Knife attack on the neck
Jaspreet said Jagjit intervened and helped the Indian man get away. An argument then broke out between Jagjit and the other man.
During the confrontation, the woman allegedly approached from behind and stabbed Jagjit on the right side of his neck. The attack reportedly damaged major blood vessels, leading to severe blood loss and a lack of oxygen to his brain. He was subsequently declared brain dead.
Family raises questions over police probe
Jaspreet has alleged that Peel Regional Police and the local authorities did not respond appropriately to the incident. She said police did not contact the family for three days after the attack and that repeated calls from the family received no response.
She also alleged that the incident and Jagjit’s identity were not properly reported in the media.
Jaspreet said she now feels that Canada is becoming unsafe for Indian and Punjabi youngsters and criticised what she described as a slow response from the authorities.
Appeal to community to stand together
Jaspreet appealed to members of the Punjabi and Indian communities to stand together and speak out against what she described as injustice and worsening law-and-order conditions.
She said the tragedy faced by her family could happen to another family in the future and urged the community to work together to create a safer environment for the next generation.
