Delhi double murder: Youth held for killing estranged girlfriend, toddler in Majnu ka Tila
PTC News Desk: In a shocking yet brutal case, a man was arrested for killing his ex girlfriend and a six-month old toddler in Delhi's popular Majnu ka Tila area.
The accused identified as Nikhil is a native of Uttarakhand was arrested in Haldwani on Wednesday following a multi-state manhunt.
Nikhil, 24 is accused of murdering Sonal, 22, and a six-month-old girl, the daughter of her friend, on Tuesday afternoon who later fled the scene and attempted suicide at his residence. The police have said that the killing was carried out by a surgical blade.
What went wrong?
Nikhil and Sonal entered into a relationship in 2023 and soon after started living together. During this time, Sonal became pregnant. According to the police the couple then were unmarried and financially struggling sought an abortion which turned to be futile.
Sonal gave birth to the child in early 2024 and sold it to an unknown party in Almora for Rs 2 Lakh. With this money, the couple relocated to Delhi. During this time, Sonal became friends with Rashmi and eventually moved in with her after getting separated from Nikhil over persistent fights and arguments.
According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia, Nikhil during this time suspected Sonal of having an affair with Rashmi's husband Durgesh.
During this period, Sonal became pregnant again. This time, Nikhil wanted to keep the baby and was hopeful of settling down with her. Sonal, however, chose to terminate the pregnancy without informing him. Nikhil later claimed he believed the abortion was done at Durgesh's behest.
While Sonal continued to live with Rashmi's family, Nikhil was trying to compel Sonal to return.
The Day Of The Killings
On July 9, Rashmi and Durgesh were not present at home as they went to pick up her elder daughter aged five from the school. While the couple's six-month-old daughter remained at home with Sonal.
Taking advantage of the situation entered their house and engaged in an argument with Sonal. According to the police, the confrontation turned violent and Nikhil in fit of rage , slit Sonal's throat using the blade. After killing Sonal, Nikhil turned his attention to the infant and killed the child in an act of revenge for the abortion of his own unborn child.
He then fled the scene, leaving behind his mobile phone in an attempt to avoid being tracked.
