Monsoon arrives early in Delhi-NCR, heavy rain brings respite for residents
PTC News Desk: Heavy rain lashed in several parts of Delhi-NCR as monsoon arrives a day earlier on June 29. Moderate rainfall accompanied by light thunderstorms and lightning with wind speeds of 30-40 km/h are likely to occur across the national capital region during the next 2 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Light to moderate rainfall is likely to engulf today and tomorrow offering much-needed respite relief from the prolonged heatwave that gripped the city last week.
IMD Senior Scientist Naresh Kumar explained, “Almost the entire country is currently under the influence of monsoon clouds, primarily due to a low-pressure system over the northwestern Bay of Bengal. A similar system over Gujarat just yesterday helped advance the monsoon into northwestern states, including Rajasthan and the NCR region.”
This year has seen one of the swiftest monsoon progressions in recent memory. The season began with an early onset over Kerala on May 24—the earliest since 2009, when it arrived on May 23. With the monsoon now covering the entire country, the weather department has issued several alerts:
Red alert for Odisha and Jharkhand due to heavy rainfall expected from an active low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal.
Red alert for Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, where intense rain may trigger landslides and flash floods in mountainous regions.
Orange alert for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh, indicating a chance of moderate to heavy rainfall.
