Assam mourns legendary singer Zubeen Garg, cremated with full state honours | Watch
PTC Web Desk: Emotions ran high in Assam as fans, family and dignitaries paid their final respects to legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, who was cremated with full state honours on Tuesday at Kamarkuchi NC village, on the outskirts of Guwahati.
Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg, was visibly distraught during the funeral rituals, struggling to contain her grief as attendees gathered to honour the cultural icon. Following a second post-mortem at Gauhati Medical College Hospital, Zubeen Garg’s body was brought to the cremation site, placed on a podium next to the funeral pyre under a white canopy, adorned with flowers. Priests chanted Vedic hymns while Assam Police personnel carried his casket and offered a ceremonial gun salute.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Union ministers Sarbananda Sonowal, Kiren Rijiju, Pabitra Margherita, Assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimary, and several senior leaders were present. Many went down on their knees to offer floral tributes, celebrating Garg’s enduring contribution to Assamese music and culture.

Thousands of fans thronged the site, some climbing nearby hills to catch a glimpse of the proceedings. Chants of “Long Live Zubeen” and “Jai Zubeen Da” filled the air as admirers sang “Mayabini Ratir Buku,” a song Garg had wished to be performed at his funeral.
Zubeen Garg’s final journey began at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, where his body lay for public homage before being taken to Kamarkuchi. His passing has left Assam in deep mourning, with fans remembering him as the voice of a generation and a symbol of Assamese identity.
