Music maestro Ustad Rashid Khan's demise marks end of an era
PTC News Desk: Ustad Rashid Khan, the esteemed music maestro, lost his battle against cancer, succumbing to the illness at a hospital in Kolkata. At 55, his extraordinary journey in music came to an untimely end, leaving a void in the world of classical Hindustani music.
Struggling with prostate cancer, Khan, who had been under intensive treatment in Kolkata, was put on a ventilator and receiving oxygen support. Despite the medical efforts, he passed away at around 3:45 PM, as confirmed by hospital authorities.
The news of Khan's demise has shaken the music fraternity and the nation at large. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed deep sorrow, emphasizing the immense loss to both music lovers and the music industry.
Khan's health had taken a significant downturn after a cerebral attack last month, leading to his hospitalisation. Initially receiving treatment at Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, he later opted to continue his therapy in Kolkata. While initially showing signs of progress, his condition worsened.

Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, Rashid Khan inherited his musical legacy from his family, notably his uncle Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan. Under the tutelage of his maternal grand-uncle Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan, Rashid Khan's musical journey began, gaining recognition early on. He made his debut in the music world at a tender age and swiftly rose to prominence, showcasing his exceptional talent at ITC concerts. His association with the ITC Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta further honed his skills and cemented his place in the classical music realm.
Beyond classical Hindustani music, Khan delved into experimental collaborations and performances, demonstrating his adaptability and versatility. His groundbreaking contributions and partnerships with various artists marked a remarkable era in the world of music. Rashid Khan's departure has left an indelible mark, with his legacy as a musical genius destined to endure through the ages.
