India logs 83,876 fresh Covid-19 cases, positivity rate at 7.25%

Coronavirus Update: India reported 83,876 fresh Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to 4,22,72,014, as per the Union health ministry data. The number of daily cases has gone below one lakh for the first time in almost 32 days. However, the death toll rose to 5,02,874 with 895 more fatalities, according to the latest government figures. The total number of active cases in India has further dropped to 11,08,938, accounting for 2.62 percent of infections.

According to the ministry, the national Covid-19 recovery rate has improved to 96.19 percent. India witnessed 1,99,054 recoveries in the last 24 hours. Over the last 24 hours, the active Covid-19 caseload was reduced by 1,16,073 cases, now at 11,08,938. The daily positivity rate was 7.25 percent, while the weekly positivity rate was at 9.18 percent, according to the ministry. According to the report, the case mortality rate is 1.19 percent. The total number of doses given out in the country as part of the nationwide Covid-19 vaccination drive has surpassed 169.63 crore. In the previous 24 hours, 11,56,363 tests were done to detect the presence of the virus. Amid a consistent dip in Covid-19 cases, several states and Union Territories have opted to ease the restrictions induced due to the virus. The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to lift weekend lockdown from the entire valley and has allowed a few relaxations. Further, schools in Delhi and Gujarat for classes 1 to 9 have reopened from February 7. According to Johns Hopkins University, the global coronavirus caseload has surpassed 394.7 million, with more than 5.73 million deaths and more than 10.05 billion vaccines. According to the CSSE, the United States continues to be the worst-affected country, with 76,505,004 cases and 902,624 deaths. India is the country with the second-highest number of cases with 42,188,138 infections and 501,979 fatalities, followed by Brazil (26,546,399 infections and 632,514 deaths).
