Punjab politics rocked: After quitting AAP, Jouramajra quits as MLA, Samana seat falls vacant as AAP slips to 91
PTC Web Desk: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Punjab suffered another setback on Tuesday, as former Cabinet minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra stepped down from his post as the MLA from Samana, just two days after he gave up the party’s primary membership.
Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan approved the resignation and the Samana constituency has now been officially declared vacant. The development reduces the ruling party’s numbers in the 117-member House from 94 to 91.
Jouramajra had formally joined the BJP on Monday. He was accompanied by two other legislators who had left AAP: Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra, who represented Sanaur, and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, who represented Amritsar North. Both of them had also quit the Assembly and the Speaker had accepted their resignations and declared their seats empty on Monday itself.
Disqualification move by AAP
The latest resignation follows a sequence of events involving the party’s chief whip. Baljinder Kaur wrote to the Vidhan Sabha stating that Jouramajra had given up AAP’s primary membership and she asked for his disqualification as a legislator.
Acting on her letter, the Assembly secretariat served Jouramajra a notice on Monday, giving him two days to submit his reply. With his decision to resign as MLA, however, those proceedings no longer hold any relevance and have effectively ended.
With three seats now vacant following the back-to-back exits, the political temperature in Punjab is rising.
