Karwa Chauth 2022: Significance, history, celebration

New Delhi, October 12: This year, Karva Chauth falls on October 13, and on the occasion, Hindu women are going to fast throughout the day for the good health and longevity of their husbands. Karva Chauth is celebrated on the fourth day after the Purnima in the month of Kartik. The married women worship Goddess Parvati, followed by Lord Shiva, Lord Ganesh, and Lord Kartikeya.

Karva Chauth 2022 History  

The Karva Chauth history can be traced back to Karva Devi, whose husband got attacked by a crocodile. To save her husband Karva tied the crocodile with a cotton thread and asked the God of death- ‘Yamraj’- to punish the crocodile to hell. Yamraj got afraid and he sent crocodile to hell and blessed Karva’s husband with a long life. Likewise, Karva and her husband lived happily together. Another story linked to Karva is that as per Hindu religion, Draupadi too observed a fast for the long life of her husband. The story recites that when Arjuna went for penance in the Nilgris, Pandavas faced a lot in his absence. Likewise, Draupadi kept a fast of Karva Chauth with all the rituals and consequently, Pandavas were able to overcome their problems.

Karva Chauth 2022 Significance

Karva Chauth is one of the significant day for Hindu religion. On this day married women pray to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and Karva Mata during Karva Chauth for the long life of their husbands. They also observe a day’s fast and pray for the longevity of their husband’s life. Adding to the spirit of the festival women wear traditional clothes in red or yellow hues, don the traditional symbols of a married woman (like sindoor, bangles, bindi etc), and apply Mehendi on hands, as it is considered auspicious. The Hindu festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm among the married couple. On this day, women keep a ‘nirajala’ fast till the moonrise.
