5 dead, two hospitalised after consuming 'contaminated' ayurvedic syrup in Gujarat
PTC News Desk: At least five people have died and two have been hospitalized in Gujarat's Kheda district in the last two days after allegedly consuming a contaminated ayurvedic syrup containing methyl alcohol, according to police.
According to preliminary investigations, the ayurvedic syrup, branded as 'Kalmeghasav - Asava Arishta,' was sold over the counter to nearly 50 people by a shopkeeper in Bilodara village near Nadiad town in Gujarat's Kheda district by a shopkeeper.
"Blood sample report of a villager confirmed that methyl alcohol was added to the syrup before it was sold," said Kheda Superintendent of Police, Rajesh Gadhiya.
"Five people died after consuming the syrup in the last two days, and two are still receiving treatment. Three people, including the shopkeeper, have been detained for further questioning," he said.
Methyl alcohol is a highly toxic substance.
