PTC News Desk: The dread of a serial killer hangs over a rural area in Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, where nine women have been killed in the last 14 months in very identical circumstances. The nine women that were killed were of the same age. Police officials reported that all of the women were strangled to death, most with their own saree.

Last year, eight women between the ages of 40 and 65 were killed in the neighbouring Shahi, Sheeshgarh, and Shergarh police stations. In all cases, the victims were found in sugarcane fields, with their clothes dishevelled, but no evidence of sexual abuse. Another similar thread in the killings was that the majority of the ladies were choked to death by the sarees they were wearing.

Three murders took place in fast succession in June, followed by one each in July, August, and October, and two in November.

Following the eighth murder, an extra force of 300 police officers, organised into 14 teams of uniformed and plainclothes officers, came together in the area to patrol and monitor known criminals.

No more murders occurred after that, and although the killer - or killers - had not been apprehended, local residents and authorities breathed a sigh of relief.

The peace lasted only seven months when Anita, 45, was strangled and her body discovered in a sugarcane field in July.

Anita, a resident of Bhujiya Jagir village in Shergarh, had travelled to her maternal home in Fatehganj's Khirka village. On July 2, she left the house and went to the bank to withdraw money. Her body was found in a sugarcane field, and a post-mortem revealed that she had been strangled using her saree.

An official stated that they suspected one individual, a serial killer, was responsible for last year's murders, and the July killing has only confirmed those suspicions.

After speaking with different people from the areas where the murders occurred, the police released sketches of three suspects. They've also provided a list of phone numbers for people to call if they have any leads, including 9554402549 and 9258256969 for the Superintendent of Police (South), Bareilly.
