Major mishap averted as Air India plane catches fire after landing at Delhi airport; all passengers safe
PTC Web Desk: An Air India flight from Hong Kong to Delhi caught fire shortly after landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport on Tuesday. The fire broke out in the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit (APU) after it had parked at the gate. All passengers and crew members disembarked safely, and no injuries were reported.
Flight AI 315 had completed its journey from Hong Kong and was at the parking bay when the incident occurred. The APU, which supplies power when the main engines are off, automatically shut down as per safety protocols. The fire was quickly brought under control.
In a statement, Air India said, “Flight AI 315, operating from Hong Kong to Delhi on 22 July 2025, experienced an auxiliary power unit (APU) fire shortly after it had landed and parked at the gate. The incident occurred while passengers had begun disembarking, and the APU was automatically shut down as per system design.”
The airline confirmed that while the aircraft suffered some damage, all passengers and crew exited the aircraft safely. The plane has been grounded for inspection, and aviation authorities have been informed.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) also confirmed that the fire was quickly extinguished and an investigation is underway. This is the third safety-related incident involving Air India in the past two days.
On Monday, an Air India flight bound for Kolkata had to abort takeoff from Delhi due to a technical problem. On the same day, Air India flight AI 2744 from Kochi to Mumbai veered off the runway during landing in heavy rain. The aircraft later taxied to the gate and all passengers disembarked safely. That aircraft is also grounded for checks.
In a separate incident, an IndiGo flight (6E 813) from Goa to Indore made an emergency landing in Indore after a technical snag was detected in its landing gear. All 140 passengers on board landed safely. IndiGo said the aircraft would undergo detailed checks before being cleared to fly again.
