'Not our culture': Ashwini Vaishnaw calls for laws to check vulgar content on social media

PTC News Desk: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw spoke on Wednesday about measures to prevent vulgar content on social media. He responded to Lok Sabha member Arun Govil's questions about laws to check abusive content during question hour in the Lok Sabha.

The Union Minister responded saying, "There is a lot of difference between the culture of our country and the countries from where these social media platforms have come. So I would like the Standing Committee of the Parliament to take up this issue and strict laws are made regarding the same."

Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that existing laws must be strengthened to prevent obscene content from being shared on social media. In the Lok Sabha, the Information and Broadcasting Minister stated that the Parliamentary Standing Committee should address the issue and urged for a consensus to draft more stringent laws in this area.

Previously, editorial checks were conducted to check whether anything was right or wrong, but these checks have been discontinued.

There is a need to strengthen current laws to combat vulgar content on social media platforms, Vaishnaw stated amid the din in the House. He was responding to BJP member Arun Govil's questions about existing mechanisms to prevent illegal telecasts of vulgar and sex-related content via social media platforms, as well as whether the government intends to make existing laws more stringent, given that the said laws are ineffective in stopping the misuse of these platforms.

Meanwhile, Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 12 noon on Wednesday due to opposition members' protests over the Adani scandal, recent violence in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, and other issues. As soon as the House met for the day, many Opposition members, including members of Congress, rose to their feet to raise a variety of issues.

Some Congress and Samajwadi Party members were in the Well, while other opposition members stood in the aisle shouting slogans.
