Aviation regulator DGCA U-turns on crew rest rule amid IndiGo’s nationwide crisis
PTC Web Desk: India’s aviation regulator has withdrawn a key provision of the newly introduced crew rostering rules as IndiGo struggled with massive nationwide flight disruptions for the third consecutive day. The airline cancelled more than 700 flights on Friday, leading to long queues and confusion at airports across the country.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) reversed the clause that barred airlines from counting crew and pilot leave as part of their weekly rest. This rule had severely restricted rostering flexibility, especially for IndiGo, which is currently facing a shortage of staff.
In an order issued with immediate effect, the DGCA said it was withdrawing its earlier instruction that “no leave shall be substituted for weekly rest” for all airlines.
The regulator explained that the decision was taken after receiving multiple representations from airlines seeking relief to stabilise operations.
“Considering the ongoing operational disruptions and the need to maintain continuity of services, the provision has been reviewed,” the DGCA stated. “The instruction is hereby withdrawn with immediate effect.”
The relaxation of Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL) norms is expected to give airlines more room to manage crew schedules and reduce cancellations. For IndiGo, India’s largest budget carrier, this move may help restore normal operations in the coming days.
