Bal Sadan, Chinmaya Mission empowering orphaned girls through education, values and secure living
PTC Web Desk: Bal Sadan, an orphanage under the aegis of Chinmaya Mission Chandigarh, continues to transform the lives of destitute girls by offering them not only a safe and nurturing environment but also a solid foundation of education, spiritual values, and life skills.
Founded in collaboration with Dr Kumar and Kalpana Ghai, the Panchkula-based home is a shining example of compassionate service and female empowerment. Under the mission’s Residential Youth Leadership Programme, girls are provided with secure accommodation, quality education, and training in classical music and spiritual teachings such as Gita classes. The main branch of Bal Sadan is located in Sector 12, Panchkula.
Since its inception, Bal Sadan has facilitated the dignified marriage of 42 orphaned girls, many of whom are now successfully employed in respected professions. Kalpana Ghai, general secretary of Chinmaya Mission Chandigarh since 1995, is credited with the tireless efforts behind the mission’s success. Her leadership and dedication have been instrumental in driving the center’s vision forward.
The property in Sector 10, Panchkula, donated by Picky Panwar in 2007 and officially transferred to the mission in 2020, now serves as a key facility of the organisation. The mission also receives regular guidance from spiritual leaders such as Swami Swaroopananda Ji of Chinmaya Mission Dharamshala and visiting swamis who deliver sermons in Chandigarh.
Renovations to the girls’ living quarters have recently been completed, with Stefelan Leser of Groz Beckert funding upgrades to the first floor. The ground floor was modernised by long-standing patron Lalita Prakash, a renowned educationist who runs two schools in Chandigarh and actively contributes to social welfare initiatives.
Prakash and her husband Chander Prakash have also taken up the responsibility of arranging the weddings of two girls from Bal Sadan. Suman, a girl from Himachal Pradesh, is scheduled to be married in October 2025. Meanwhile, the kanyadaan ceremony for Ritu, a Tamilian girl, was performed by the couple on Sunday, May 18, at the Chinmaya Mission Centre in Chandigarh. All household essentials and wedding necessities were generously arranged by the couple.
Other key patrons supporting the mission include Sudha Banth, Lalita Prakash, Narjit Singh, Shalini Rawat, Arun Almadi, and Anubhav Tiwari — each playing a significant role in empowering underprivileged girls through education and social support.
