Delhi records highest single-day rainfall

India Meteorological Department said that Delhi received 153 mm of rain in 24 hours ending at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, the most in a single July day since 1982.

The interaction of a western disturbance and monsoonal winds is causing an intense rainstorm throughout northwest India, including Delhi, which received the season's first "very heavy" rainfall.

Meanwhile, Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Chandigarh along with several states due to the continuous rain.

Ajay Kumar Singh, a Meteorological Department officer, stated that the monsoon in the country is fully active and has arrived in Punjab and Haryana before time.

Until Sunday, heavy to very heavy rain is expected across Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

“There is also a chance of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall occurring in the western Himalayan region, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, and Rajasthan from July 8-10. Also, Uttar Pradesh is likely to see rainfall for the next five days," IMD said.

According to the IMD, heavy rainfall is unlikely in the region beginning July 11.
