Dehradun, September 12: The Dehradun police have cracked the murder case of a Nepali woman within 24 hours of discovering her body in a suspicious state in the Sirwal Garh area on Monday. Ramendu Upadhyay, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army stationed in Uttarakhand, has been arrested in this regard.
As per the police, the Army officer had reportedly met the woman at a dance bar in Siliguri, West Bengal, and subsequently he brought the woman to Uttarakhand. During the investigation, the police found that the woman belonged to Nepal and was a resident of Siliguri.
The police said accused Ramendu Upadhyay, stationed in the Clement Town cantonment area, allegedly murdered the 30-year-old woman with whom he had an extramarital relationship as she had been pressurising him to marry her. Upadhyay was arrested from his residence in Panditwari Prem Nagar.
The victim, identified as Shreya Sharma, had met the accused at a dance bar in Siliguri and they had been in relationship for the last three years. Upon his transfer to Dehradun, he brought Shreya along with him to the city, where he confessed to renting a flat for her during police interrogation.
Upadhyay and the woman, after consuming alcohol at a club on Rajpur Road on Saturday night, made plans for a late-night drive, which she agreed to. However, their journey took a dark turn when they arrived at Thano Road, a secluded area on the city's outskirts, around 1:30 am. At that point, Upadhyay parked the car and allegedly struck the woman on the head multiple times with a hammer until she succumbed to her injuries, as reported by the police.
Following the heinous act, Upadhyay disposed of her body along the roadside and fled the scene. The Army officer is already married.
