Delhi-NCR hit by heavy rainfall, red alert issued: Flights may face delays even as commuters struggle with waterlogging
PTC Web Desk: Heavy rainfall pounded parts of Delhi-NCR on Tuesday morning, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the national capital. The downpour brought widespread disruption, leading to waterlogging and traffic snarls across various areas.
Several visuals circulating on social media, including those shared by ANI, showed people trudging through rain-flooded streets and vehicles navigating water-clogged roads. The intense showers affected daily movement and caused a significant slowdown in city traffic.
The IMD reported that Delhi recorded 8 mm of rainfall over the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am. The minimum temperature was logged at 26.8°C—slightly below the seasonal norm. Forecasts indicate overcast skies with moderate rainfall throughout the day, while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 30°C. Relative humidity stood at 70 percent in the morning.
The inclement weather also triggered flight delay advisories. Air India cautioned passengers about potential disruptions, stating, "#TravelAdvisory: Gusty wind and rain may impact flight operations to and from Delhi this morning. Please check your flight status before heading to the airport and allow extra time for your journey."
IndiGo issued a similar alert, urging passengers to factor in possible delays and slower road travel to the airport. “With heavy rainfall forecast over Delhi, delays and slower traffic are likely. Please plan accordingly and check your flight status in advance,” the airline said in its advisory.
Meanwhile, air quality in Delhi remained in the satisfactory range, with an AQI of 87, as per data released by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) at 9 am. Authorities have urged commuters to exercise caution, stay updated on weather alerts, and avoid low-lying waterlogged areas.
