Ethylene oxide: MDH, Everest face scrutiny over ban in Hong Kong, Singapore due to alleged contamination
Ethylene oxide: The ongoing controversy surrounding the alleged presence of harmful compounds in certain products of Indian spice brands MDH and Everest, leading to their ban in Hong Kong and Singapore, has prompted action from the Spices Board. Under the purview of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, officials at the Board have initiated comprehensive measures to address the situation.
Gathering pertinent information and reports from the authorities in both Hong Kong and Singapore, the Spices Board is diligently collating technical data, analytical reports, and details concerning exporters. Besides, the Spices Board has issued an advisory to exporters, aimed at enhancing awareness and preventing future instances of Indian products being flagged.
The ban was enacted following the discovery of elevated levels of the pesticide ethylene oxide in certain spice mixes manufactured by the aforementioned brands. Ethylene oxide, prohibited for addition to food in India, is a chemical compound known for its sterilising properties due to its ability to damage DNA. However, this same attribute renders it carcinogenic, as classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) under Group 1, indicating sufficient evidence of its carcinogenicity in humans.
In response to the situation, the Ministry of Commerce had directed Indian embassies in both Singapore and Hong Kong to furnish detailed reports. Concurrently, inquiries have been initiated with MDH and Everest to obtain requisite information.
Notably, India stands as the world's largest consumer, producer, and exporter of spices, with the Spices Board entrusted with regulating the export of this vital commodity.
