Fog and low visibility lead to cancellation of 66 flights at Delhi airport
PTC Web Desk: Dense fog and poor visibility conditions disrupted air traffic at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Friday, leading to the cancellation of 66 flights, officials said.
According to sources, the affected services included 32 incoming flights and 34 departures, as several airlines suspended operations to ensure passenger safety amid challenging weather conditions. The persistent fog significantly reduced visibility, impacting both take-offs and landings at the airport.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has designated the period from December 10 to February 10 as the official fog window for the winter season, during which flight operations are often affected across northern India.
Under DGCA’s fog-related operational guidelines, airlines are required to deploy pilots trained to operate in low-visibility conditions and use aircraft equipped with CAT-IIIB-compliant landing systems. Category-III navigation technology enables aircraft to land safely during dense fog, even when visibility drops to extremely low levels.
Passengers have been advised to stay in touch with airlines for real-time updates, as foggy conditions are expected to continue in the region over the coming days.
