Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik passes away at 79

He served as the last governor of former state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure that Article 370 was abrogated and the special status of the state was revoked on 5 August 2019.

Former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik passes away at 79

PTC News Desk:  Former governor of Jammu and Kashmir Satyapal Malik passed away at the age of 79 after prolonged illness. He breathed his last at Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohiya hospital where  he was undergoing treatment. 

He served as the last governor of former state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure that Article 370 was abrogated and the special status of the state was revoked on 5 August 2019. 


Today marks sixth anniversary of one of the most contentious decision of BJP led NDA government. 

Malik commenced his political journey in the 1970s as a prominent socialist leader. In 1974, he was elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly from Baghpat on a Bharatiya Kranti Dal ticket.

He later became the General Secretary of the Lok Dal and served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh between 1980 and 1989.

Over the years, Malik had been associated with various political parties, including Charan Singh’s Bharatiya Kranti Dal, the Congress, and the V.P. Singh-led Janata Dal, before ultimately joining the BJP in 2004.

He was later appointed Governor of Goa and subsequently served as the Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022.
