How Canada's relationship with India alter under Carney's leadership as Liberal gear up for comeback ?
PTC News Desk: As Mark Carney is all set to retain power and become Canada's Prime Minister for the second term, country's ties with India are likely to enter a new phase which took a back seat after diplomatic ties took a back seat following Canada's allegations of the Indian government's alleged involvement in the murder of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Mark Carney, a globally respected economist and former governor of both the Bank of England and the Bank of Canada, is expected to take a pragmatic approach to foreign policy that could benefit India.
While describing the relationship with India, Mark Carney indicated that Canada could possibly bring a positive shift in ties with India while asserting that the relationship is incredibly important.
Responding to a question Carney said, “It’s an incredibly important relationship, the Canada-India relationship, on many levels. On the personal level, with Canadians having deep personal ties, economically, strategically.”
Drawing from Carney’s remarks during the election campaign, trade appears to be one of the most promising areas where India could quickly benefit from strengthened ties with Canada.
He has clearly expressed his goal of expanding Canada’s economic relationships by collaborating with "like-minded countries," explicitly identifying India as a significant partner.
Mark Carney’s Potential Position on Immigration and Visas
Carney is likely to maintain supportive immigration policies, especially benefiting Indian professionals and students. Given his economic expertise, he is expected to prioritize attracting skilled talent to bolster Canada’s innovation and labor market demands.
Stronger diplomatic relations could lead to higher approval rates for student and work visas, quicker processing of permanent residency applications, and improved recognition of professional credentials between the two countries.
