India issues travel advisory for Vietnam: Phu Quoc visa rules, passport loss risks explained for Indian tourists

PTC Web Desk: The Embassy of India in Vietnam has issued an important advisory for Indian travellers planning a visit to Vietnam. The warning focuses on two main concerns, visa rules for Phu Quoc Island and the risks linked to losing passports while travelling.

Phu Quoc Island has become a favourite destination among Indian tourists because it offers visa-free entry. However, the Embassy has clarified that this benefit comes with strict conditions. Travellers entering without a visa are allowed to stay only on the island and cannot travel to mainland cities like Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi.

The advisory highlights that problems may arise in emergency situations. For example, if a traveller needs to leave the island due to medical issues, flight cancellations or any urgent reason, they may face difficulties without a valid visa. This could lead to delays in medical treatment, restricted movement and immigration complications.

To avoid such issues, the Embassy has advised Indian nationals to get a proper Vietnamese visa before travelling, even if their plan is to stay only on Phu Quoc Island. Those who still choose visa-free travel should be ready to handle possible problems if they need to leave the island unexpectedly.

The Embassy also raised concerns about cases where Indian travellers lose their passports in Vietnam. In such situations, travellers must first file a police complaint at the nearest police station. After that, they need to contact the Indian Embassy or Consulate with the required documents.

While Indian authorities usually issue emergency travel documents quickly, travellers cannot leave immediately. They must wait for an exit permit from Vietnamese authorities, which generally takes three to five working days, and sometimes longer. During this time, travellers are required to stay in Vietnam until all formalities are completed.

The advisory aims to help Indian tourists avoid trouble and travel safely by being better prepared before their trip.
