Jaipur woman dies by suicide after alleged years of abuse; husband booked after videos surface
PTC Web Desk: Close on the heels of the Twisha Sharma case that sparked public discussion over domestic abuse, another incident from Jaipur has come under the spotlight.
A 36-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide after facing years of physical and verbal abuse from her husband, the police said. The accused, Gautam Meena, an executive engineer posted in Tonk, has been booked for abetment to suicide and domestic cruelty after videos allegedly showing assault were recovered from the woman’s mobile phone.
According to police and family members, Anu Meena had married Gautam in 2015. Her relatives alleged that she had been suffering abuse for several years and that her husband often assaulted her after consuming alcohol.
The couple’s 10-year-old son, Mahir, told investigators that he had frequently seen his father beating his mother. He recalled one incident in which Gautam allegedly returned home angry, broke the television set and assaulted Anu during an argument.
The child also said his mother often suffered from low blood pressure and would ask him to prepare salt water whenever she felt unwell.
Their eight-year-old daughter, Samayra, reportedly told the police that arguments between the couple were common and often continued during family outings and social gatherings.
The police said Anu allegedly died by suicide on April 7. Family members claimed she made a video call to her husband shortly before taking the extreme step.
Neighbours informed the family after the incident. Efforts were reportedly made to revive her through CPR, but she could not be saved.
Anu’s mother, Maya, said her daughter had spoken about the abuse several times, but the family never expected the situation to end in such a tragedy. She also revealed that she had missed a phone call from Anu on the day of the incident and now regrets not answering it.
Days after her death, Mahir reportedly accessed his mother’s phone and found several videos that allegedly showed Gautam verbally abusing Anu and her family members.
Anu’s brother, Neeraj Meena, said the family had repeatedly asked her to return home, but she chose to stay back hoping her husband would change. He claimed Gautam would apologise after violent incidents, leading the family to believe things might improve.
The family further alleged that even after the incident, Gautam did not appear remorseful and allegedly stated that spending a few days in jail “would not be a problem”.
Authorities are also examining CCTV footage and other evidence related to the case.
