Jammu-Srinagar highway traffic halted for 14 hours starting Saturday

Srinagar, March 9: Due to adverse road conditions and landslide debris causing narrowing of the highway at multiple points, traffic on the crucial Jammu-Srinagar national highway was restricted to one-way movement on Saturday, officials stated.

Authorities confirmed that traffic would be allowed only from Srinagar to Jammu on Saturday, with no vehicles permitted to travel in the opposite direction. "Light motor vehicles will be allowed to move until 1 p.m., followed by the passage of heavy motor vehicles," officials elaborated.

On Friday, traffic flowed in a single direction from Jammu to Srinagar along the highway. In a separate development, authorities announced a suspension of traffic on the highway for a duration of 14 hours, starting from 10 p.m. on Saturday, to facilitate widening efforts.

"In light of the request received from Project Director, NHAI, PIU Ramban, and to ensure the safety of travelers, permission has been granted for a 14-hour traffic halt from March 9 at 10 p.m. to March 10 at 12 p.m. for widening the carriageway to two lanes at Dhalwas," traffic department officials disclosed on Saturday.

"During this halt, widening work will also be undertaken at other locations from Nashri to Banihal," they added. Spanning nearly 300 kilometers, the highway serves as the primary artery for supplying essential commodities to the landlocked Valley.
