Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Amritpal Singh to contest as Independent candidate from Punjab's Khadoor Sahib seat

Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, who is lodged at the Dibrugarh jail in Assam, will contest the Lok Sabha elections 2024 as an independent candidate from Khadoor Sahib. This has been confirmed by his mother Balwinder Kaur.

Announcing this on Friday, Amritpal Singh's mother Balwinder Kaur said "to counter the escalating atrocities allegedly being inflicted upon the youth by the government, and to give a strong message to curtail the wave of religious propaganda, to eliminate the NSA and for the release of imprisoned Sikhs, Amritpal Singh would be contesting the Lok Sabha elections 2024 from Khadoor Sahib constituency as an independent candidate".

She claimed that several people, councils, and various organisations had been demanding that alleged oppression by the government against the youth be stopped. "They are being taken thousands of miles away to the Dibrugarh jail just for a meeting, facing various humiliations even for a mere visit, where permission to organise religious awareness marches is denied, and where all shame is being borne without hesitation. The spread of addiction and vices is gaining momentum, and there's no boundary being set to stop the conversion of poor Sikh families. Therefore, it has become imperative that Amritpal Singh contests the elections as an independent candidate to expose the government's lies and take the escalating atrocities against the youth to an international level," she added.

She claimed that Amritpal Singh didn't intend to contest elections initially, but circumstances now demanded a change in their strategy.

Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh was arrested in Moga's Rode village on April 23 last year, following a manhunt lasting over a month. The Punjab Police initiated the crackdown in response to the Ajnala incident on February 23 last year.

During this incident, Amritpal Singh and his supporters, some of whom were reportedly armed with swords and guns, allegedly broke through barricades and entered a police station on the outskirts of Amritsar city. A clash ensued with the police as they demanded the release of Lovepreet Singh Toofan, one of Amritpal's associates.
