Judge's teen son rams Mercedes into scooter, kills 55-year-old man in Keralam
PTC News Desk: A 55-year-old man was killed in a road accident in Kochi, Kerala, in the early hours of Sunday after a Mercedes-Benz car allegedly driven by the 17-year-old son of a judge hit his scooter from behind.
The incident took place between 2 am and 3 am. The luxury car was registered in the name of the judicial officer. Following the accident, the minor driver was taken into police custody.
The victim was identified as Jayabalakrishnan. Police said preliminary findings did not indicate that the teenager was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. However, blood samples have been collected for further testing.
The police have invoked charges related to reckless driving and causing death by negligence. Images from the accident site showed the front of the Mercedes badly damaged.
Victim was returning home from work
Jayabalakrishnan’s niece told reporters that he ran a food stall to earn his livelihood and was returning home when the accident occurred.
She alleged that the car was being driven at high speed, pointing to the severe damage to her uncle’s scooter and the belongings scattered across the accident site.
The woman also alleged that the minor’s father spoke to her disrespectfully at the police station when she questioned why his underage son had been allowed to drive the car.
“We will pursue the case, especially in view of the judge’s attitude. This should also serve as a lesson to everyone not to drive without a licence,” she said.
Police are continuing their investigation into the accident.
